As I said in the other topic:
Quote:
I'm not "in the project" but please let someone with an eye for design do the design, IMHO the design of that project pdf looks awful and if you're going to design the whole system like that it useless to make because nobody will use it. The eye wants something too, you know ;).

Design is something that will be later, not important yet. If you want to see something, for fun I've made a little quick about page on The Phlox project - By the community of TalkPHP.com.

A permission system is quite hard to do. But I'm up for it.

Worry about design last, it shouldnt be a problem since if you use a templating system.

Also, why would you think a PDF (well, I made it in powerpoint) design would be our site design?

I dont think its to difficult to do. Well; maybe a little :D

I was thinking just a simple ACL setup all completely powered by the database.

Naturally we will need an admin screen for managing this. It may be a good idea to research into others available out there and see if there are any already done solutions if we can't come up with it ourselves.

Exactly. We could completely design this out of straight, unstyled garbage looking website. Sure its difficult to program with; but I suspect alot of us programmers are use to doing this and making the actual design last (usually if designed well enough everything will just pick right up).

please people focus on the stuff in hand don't focus on what sjaq is saying i don't even think he knows what the project is about.

as a reminder please look at the thread for developers and look if you can help solve one of those things, before we can start

A permission system is quite simple, we can just use bits =)

lol. I dont think we even have a direction yet. Were waiting on VB Projects to be installed, and as far as I understand that, we can use that to track bugs, as well as 'feature enhancements' to the script.

Also, we kinda need our standards laid out too.

Then someone step up and take initiative. Codefreek will probably accept anything proposed.

I know I'm not 'supposed' to be posting in this forum, but I'd just like to point out that you could use a set of guidelines which are endorsed by other big open source projects such as phpBB, Joomla etc.

I personally prefer the phpBB3 • Coding Guidelines
. Not all of the things in that document would relate to your project, but most of it is good stuff.

You could alternatively follow the PEAR guidelines

To get back on track here, I volunteerd a couple of months ago but got caught up with school and adittional work, so not really anything came out of that.

I would like to ask if there are still some 'spots', so to speak, left for me to work on. Also, after reading 4 out of 7 pages, I was wondering what the status on a server is. I got a free, high quality server sitting dorment, which only needs a domain pointer.

Next to that, I am up for the task. If only someone could get me back on track, that would be greatly appreciated.

Appologies for the lack of propper grammar, but I am in a hurry. :P

Oh damn it, just on my way out ... I totally agree with the name Phlox! My favourite character in Star Trek Enterprise (Ship's doctor).

Sorry for going slightly off topic, but to answer Jim's question:
Quote:

Using bits for user permissions, like this example:

PHP Code:
class level_flags
{
    const
VIEW       0x01;
    const
ADD        0x02;
    const
DELETE     0x04;
    const
EDIT       0x08;
}
// Set the user's permissions
$userFlags level_flags::ADD level_flags::EDIT;

// Does the user have permission to VIEW?
if($userFlags level_flags::VIEW)
{
    die(
'Yes');
}
else
{
    die(
'Go away!');

Here i have used hex to show each permission and used the & bitwise operator to check if the correct bits are set, thus giving us a powerful permission system.

This particular example returns 'Go Away!' because the VIEW isnt set within $userFlags which only has ADD and EDIT bits set.

This technique is used in a script that Wildhoney posted not long ago: Easy to Modify Login Script with Hierarchical User Permissions and XML Account File

Here is a great bitwise resource: PHP Bitwise Tutorial by Jim Plush
