When I design a template that refers to some var
e.g.
<span tal:content="title"></span>
If my PHP script doesn't set this var, an error is thrown by PHPTal.

The idea to use macro's for the form / show...
The idea to use macro's for the form / show results question is great. It seems like a valid alternative to adding the conditon statements.
