I would suggest checking out the regex pattern...
I would suggest checking out the regex pattern library (http://regexlib.com/DisplayPatterns.aspx?cattabindex=0&categoryId=1) and see if any of the ones they have match your needs....

good point. though, if he just wants a raw count, he doesnt need php to do that. He could simply use his weblogs and some web log parsing tools to get the number.

I believe this is due to the overhead in having to see if the file in question has already been required. I would bet that include_once() is also expensive for the same reasons.
