Default Searching a database

How do you do it? Do you need to use the myIsam storage engine?

Searching a database seems like a daunting task :P

It's actually pretty simple - take a look at tizag.com, it's where I learnt php and mysql
If you don't know how to search a database, then don't worry about storage engines. MyIsam is the default afair, so just stick with it.
