I'm in the process of learning PHP for a couple pet projects and I've been looking around for a nice little community where I can bug people who are 100 times smarter then myself. I think you all just may be those people, don't you feel lucky?

The first program I want to write in PHP is a MMORPG. I figure it should be pretty easy once I can understand what a variable is .. right?

Seriously though I'm not really new to programming, just new to PHP and web programming. I'll do some research before I come begging for help and I'll do my best to keep the 'noobness' to as low of a level as I possibly can.

Hi gunder, welcome to TalkPHP! I really wouldn't go so far as to say anyone here is smarter than you, just some of us have been playing with PHP for a little longer. Feel free to settle right in and just ask any questions that you have—we're not the type of community to shun people asking silly/basic questions.

An MMORPG, you say? That seems like quite a challenge you've set yourself! Would that be the first serious project you've ever created in PHP? I think if you complete that then this community will quickly turn from that to people hundreds time less smarter than yourself.

You'll be huffing, puffing and sighing when we're unable to grasp a reasonably easy problem.

Haha! It's good that you've got the confidence to think you can do something like that. There's a good chance you'll be able to do it with asking questions and research. I think people lack confidence in any ability when they're first starting with something.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I was just joking about the MMORPG. While I do think making a web game would be fun to do eventually I think I'll wait to try and take down that beast until I understand all the weapons at my disposal a bit better.

Dream big, build big gunder. Thinking in those terms can never hurt. I'm currently building a concept for a online MMORPG (text-based, natrually) with AJAX, XML and PHP (duh, XHTML and CSS). So, if you got any sort of insight or plans, it would be great to share them with 'teh group'.

Oh man, I was just joking about the MMORPG. Don't get me wrong I think it would be fun to make a game eventually but I know that isn't something I should attempt any time soon.
