An online friend of mine had a site she'd ran for years. The site had an active community going on both the forum and the blog. Over a two year period my friend began to spend less and less time at her site.

I noticed she'd been away much longer than usual. I asked her if everything was OK, and it turns out, it wasn't. She had cervical cancer. She went in for an operation and the doctor botched things up. She died from complications shortly afterward.

No one even knew until her daughter sent out an email to all of her mom's friends to let them know she'd passed away.
awwww that is sad. That's the problem with the web. Although many people can learn to become friends from afar, when certain things happen like accidents, it takes a long time for everyone to find out...if ever!

For example, I go to a lot of web forums and have accounts, but none of my friends are even into computers, so none of them know anything remotely close to the websites that I visit, including this one. If something were to happen to me, not a single person on those websites would know anything about what happened...

everyone would just assume I stopped coming and that's it...

Yeah, it was sad. I cried for days when I found out. I wish she'd have at least told me how seriously ill she was. She was going to beat the cancer and then blog about it to help other women that are facing the same situation.

She was really a wonderful, and very talented person. I miss her dearly.

None of my friends are into the web either. I mean they know how to use it, but that's about it. I've made some really close friends online and they know how to contact me here at home. So, if something ever happened to me they'd be able to find out from my Mom or my son.

It's been progressive. He was never active, nor did he ever even appear to care. When I was staff he came on every few days and he would make decisions form time to time. Eventually his visits shifted to once a week, then once every few months. He comes by every time the site has a prolonged crash, but that about it anymore. I have my doubts that he is medically ill.

Well, at least you know he isn't sick then. I certainly give you guys/gals a lot of credit for sticking around to run a forum that's been abandoned by its owner. That shows a lot of character.
