I'm a web developer of two years experience living in Manchester and working in Preston using the LAMP stack, Zend Framework, YUI. Recently been helping to organise the upcoming PHPNW'08 Conference in Manchester (visit the link in my signature for details). Well I'm from Preston originally so I'm also an addition (a leftover from my days studying at UMIST).
You might be interested in the PHPNW user group we've set up if you're local. We meet monthly, usually in Manchester. One of our members might sometimes put a talk on but we usually sit around chatting about the industry and drinking.
