I'm a bit of a debian nut, so I say debian!

delayedinsanity 08-08-2009 09:17 PM

Any form of Debian in my opinion; Ubuntu is a well maintained distribution based off of Debian, so not only do you get the power of aptitude, you also get an up to date distribution (Debian itself isn't maintained quite as well as it used to be).

@sketchMedia yeah i like debian as well but yeah i don't know, debian code changes is a hassel,
but i like debian as well..

@delayedinsanity, i know i did not say this in the first post but i am looking for a distro that is kinda code friendly to work on as well too make changes to the distro it self.. and yes Ubuntu is a vise distro as well thank you :)

I have Ubuntu, it is my fist install and I found it very easy all around.

There is really no "best" distro for a developer, all distros run the same linux kernel, they just work slightly differently up front. I don't see that as a huge issue since any self respecting linux user should know how to work the command line opposed to relying off of a GUI.

thanks for the comment Village Idiot ;)

Meh IMO linux is linux all the distros purely comes down to personal preference. I like the ones that I have to do the lease thus I choose Ubuntu, Fedora, or Linux Mint.

For a desktop I say Ubuntu too, I have always been a Fedora man, but the latest Ubuntu blew me away as a desktop - easy to setup multiple screen, virtual machines etc).

I definitely still will continue to use Fedora for my servers (dev, staging & production) - I highly recommend Fedora for servers.

i have tried fedora i like it, Ubuntu, etc.. hum i am thinking of making a change back too ubuntu, i don't know :P i love all linux distro :) but i want the one that works well for dev.. and i think ubuntu is the one. before when i had it.
It blew my mind on how good it worked for a dev person.. hum hum.. thanks for comment :) all computers at work has ubuntu and fedora, i have a old linux without,
any gui stuff, as i like to type in every command my self :) hum hum anyways..

I use Ubuntu, and Arch. I use Ubuntu mostly, for reasons unknown, and it does well.

I like Fedora most of all distro's, but I always use Ubuntu when using a linux distro.

In the end I always use Windows though...

I get the best of both worlds!

I agree with what VI said, there isn't really a 'best' linux distro for programming (there are a few that can be a pain in the ass), usually its all up too you and what you feel comfortable with.
Just download loads of em and give em a go.

Sirupsen 10-13-2009 12:51 PM

I used Fedora first, and had a lot of issues. I tried Ubuntu, and all these things just seemed to work much better, also I like Aptitude a lot better than Yum. So currently I work on Ubuntu, however as soon as Google Releases it's OS, I'm probably gonna try it out, and maybe stay at it. Because honestly, I could live with only two pieces of software, my browser - Chromium/Chrome - and Vim, so the only thing I need with Googles OS is the possibility to run Vim, and I trust Google to make it speedy, and chrash free. :)
