Linux Thread?

Do you guys think we can have a Linux thread under: Misc. Support & Development?

I assume the majority of members here are using, or are familiar with some form of linux and it would be a good idea to chat about linux related material?

I don't see a problem with it. However, most people's experience with PHP does not go past a limited shared environment. So few here probable know much about unix at all.

I'm not sure we should hand Linux its own forum, but I'd definitely give a thumbs up to a Web Server (or some other naming) forum so that we can discuss what sits behind our beloved PHP scripts/sites/applications.

Just think of it as one more forum that could help increase some traffic here. :-D

Yup that would be a better idea so those using WAMP could also participate.

No offense to linux guys, but I don't think we want too many hardcore linux users here. Especially because people like myself (and salathe IIRC) use MS technologies and think they are good.

I use Unix (in the form of OS X), Linux and Windows daily (main machine is a Macbook Pro with virtualised Windows locally and Windows/Linux web servers out in the wild). As far as fanboyism goes, I'm firmly on the fence: OSes have their pros and cons, all of them, and in general are great tools to (mis)use :-).

Well what I'm hoping for is that PHP people will find this place first, and then if they see there's also a linux or web server forum, they can look to seek questions/answers within the forum itself...

I'm using Vista 64-bit daily with VMware running CentOS and a couple WinXP Pro's because unfortunately Cisco doesn't support Vista 64-bit with their VPN clients unless you are using their latest Cisco ASA's which I'm not. (I still have the old school Cisco PIX 515)

But anyways. I am not fanboy of any OS. I am curious about all OS's and love to play with different variants.

Back in December I was 90% close to buying the latest Macbook Pro's but the new model only came in 15" and I really wanted the 17" MBP. Now that it is out, I still haven't ran to the Apple store yet to pick one up...

It's a beautiful OS though...

I am up for a forum like that. Which would also help to share our experiences and questions about a Server Administrator, Let it be Mac OS, Windows or Linux-based servers.

Krik 03-23-2009 10:08 PM

While many sites I frequent have them. I do notice that across the board, even on high population forums, all the web sever forums (windows, linux, unix) seem to maybe get one post a week on the subject.

While a high population forum may find them used some, here it may be a bit premature.

And really is there people here that can answer questions is the biggest point. Maybe there is, but if not there would just be a forum of questions with no answers.

Well that is the analysis of it. Outside of that I think its something that will eventually be a good idea.

ETbyrne 03-24-2009 12:29 AM

I agree with Kirk, a sub-forum on servers specifically isn't really needed for a PHP forum... At least not for Talk PHP at this time. I just hate it when you visit a forum and it has a bagillion sub-forums, it's very overwhelming!
