Hi talking PHP friends!

Some of you might have already read the thread about people being bored as hell at their webdevelopment job. I've thought about this matter since the topic is online, apperantly I'm not the only developer being bored at their job.

For a few months already im bored at my (part-time) job, making me wonder: Would I like to spend the rest of my life as a webdeveloper? Even when I released my new website two days ago, I can't even get excited about that anymore. So when can you get excited about webdevelopment? When you reach 1000+ unique visitors a day? Or maybe when you start making money with it? I don't know anymore because each new record i make doesnt seem to intrest me much.

Do you have the same feeling, or maybe you've already came up with the awnser of this problem? Thanks in advance :)

jim, i think when you make cash or get more visitors is a great thing and also a good feeling,
but the best thing is when you learn something new and start doing things you never thought you will do in this life time. So yeah it's different most people start learning other programming languages and start doing that and etc.

But its easy to get bored but as a freelancer its more fun :D
so you might wanna try new ways of Dev.

Know how you feel.
I'm a freelancer, had few project behind me..
Currently I'm not that eager on developing new stuff on my CMS for nobody.. I'd rather be working in a company, have a monthly income and live out of it, just to get the kicks.
I'm on my last year for a engineer, when I get my diploma I'll see what I really want to do.

Mostly I'm sick doing shops for little firms and CMSs for a few peanuts.. I really want to work on some project, improve it.. lol

Back from sysadmins to the programmers.

I only really get excited working on sites with an audience (1000+ uniques) or building classes to do things that you normally have to do by hand (Like making forms, writing xhtml, PDFs, etc)

That is the same way with me. I have been using jQuery as of late and have been ecstatic about playing with it. Its brought some life back into me; the downside is that the things I am doing are already done and functional -- im just making them *perty*. lol. This is sure a phase for me as well.

See I am the exact opposite of you guys, as Jim initially mentioned I was the one who started the original bored thread. I have the office job and am absolutely bored out of my mind with it. Unfortunately it pays so well that I can't just dump it and go freelance anymore. The other side effect is that it takes up to much time for me to start doing freelance work again.

As for me from a continuance of the other thread; I already know I am not going to stay at that job forever; I have maybe 3 years left before my mind hits meltdown from that place. My boredom has to be corrected though or I get yelled at :x

Well, I guess there are always things like false fire alarms (such as the one this morning at my office) to keep you on your toes. Apparently this happens often since only a couple employees left, and that was to get away from the noise. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to get someone away from work....

lol, you sound like me. Looking for every excuse not to do the work we are suppose to be doing. I think it is a sad point in time when the things we look forward to are not doing the work of which is suppose to be our 'career'.

I think part of the problem is the IT world in itself is just not that exciting. I can tell you it is without a doubt a thankless job. I mean sure, you get thanked when you fix something, or create a new application for someone, but then it is turned right back around and put into the point of 'ok now heres what we need to do next'.

I personally believe its because we are detached from the actual business (whatever it may be). We provide the tools, but never get to use them in a functioning environment to take care of the 'real' customers *the ones paying money for stuff*. Even this breaks down farther; you may create websites to whom someone pays money for it. But you leave the website once you have delivered it and come around to it again only when they need an update/fix.

I dunno. Maybe we just bitch to much :x lol

I find it interesting because I never felt this way in the many factory jobs I had. Even working at fedex ground, that job sucked, but was fun because it was nothing but a constant competition of numbers each and every single day. I didn't have time to be bored.

Things that excite me throughout the day that usually occur daily:
1) Lunch
2) When my one teamate gets on her kicks about the current 'gas and oil' situation. She'll rant for half hours at a time
3) Sneaking out of the office early
4) Some computer system crashes (for some reason the chaos makes me hyper)

Everything else seems like a drudgery lol.

I am no slacker, I just don't love what I do (which is inevitable for all jobs). We have a huge task we have to get done in the next month, as in 50 hours a week huge.

Though I do agree with you on the rest.

Yeah, sorry I wasn't trying to infer that about you! :) I was just rambling as usual :D

I am 50% a slacker when I dont like what I do. It is usually very hard for me to find something I dont like doing, but I have definately found it now. lol. The only thing that keeps me motivated (save the paycheck), is that I know I wont stay here for a long time.

for blah blah blah :P well anyways

you guys need to just think on what was it that drag you in to it world in the first place you love to make cms and shit ;)
just spice it up by asking companies if they want a special project or ask the company you are working for if the company can start a project or something to spice it up
come up with ideas! :D

I'm all for defending your home, and your neighbours, I just wish it was still (really) old school, where if your leader felt it necessary to do battle, he (or she) led you in. Not this new school BS where everybody sending our kids in to battle sit behind safely in their own country, where they don't even know what's really going on out there. If you want me to put my ass on the line for you, you better damn well put your ass on the line for me.

If you find something you love, you should do it, because it'll never be a job then. If you hate what you do, you need to look at the reasons you're doing it. A lot of this world has the capitalist mentality that it doesn't matter what you do, as long as you rake in the money. People need to stop thinking like that, and realize that if you get the bills paid, and you're clothed and fed, everything else is just a bonus.

That system worked when they had kings who became king at a young age. At the age of our presidents, they wouldn't last a day no matter what. Plus our enemies have changed, it used to be "honorable" warfare not to hit the king, that is not the case anymore. War is not what it used to be, nor is politics. Although I do agree that it is too easy for old men (not just the president, but congress who must approve a war) to declare a war that the young must pay for.

edit: That is why I don't like the idea of having anyone in an office that can have part in declaring war who has not been in the military themselves.
