Okay, time to ante up on the hosting situation.

Who do you use, and why are they the best?

Some of you may have heard me in the past complain about my host. :) Well it's time to make the move at the end of this month, and let me just sing their praises to everybody out there. NEVER, and I mean EVER, sign up for a hosting package with Network Solutions. Just don't.

I'm going to switch, and I'm personally looking for a host with PHP and MySQL 5, preferably with such modules already available as mod_rewrite, and mysql extended. Somebody else here told me about toastedpenguin.com and they're looking like a possibility, but what does everybody else think? I'll hook up with a dedicated server down the line if my needs require it, but for now, lets just take a look at strong, reliable, and friendly LAMP based hosts.

I currently use UK Web Hosting - UK Reseller Hosting - UK Managed Dedicated Servers - UK Domain Registration Services - their support team are absolutely brilliant, they have a great spam filtering system and they make backups of their servers 4 times a day :) .
The price is a little steep, but it's worth it for what you get.
You can purchase shared, reseller or dedicated plans.

However, recently I've been wanting to use custom programs such as subversion (Unfortunately UH do not support / allow you to install svn unless you own a dedicated server). Slicehost - VPS Hosting are supposed to be an excellent vps host, and I have not heard a single complaint about their servers / support.

I'm running my own little server, but because of noise it isn't turned on 24/7 therefor i use One.com Web hosting**-**Domain • Hosting • E-mail** they are okay, never had a single problem with them, but unfortunately i can't afford another year right now, i'm 17 haven't got a job, and owe a great deal of money away.... :|

I'm Dutch so my webhosts have always been Dutch. I started with PCextreme.nl, it was a quick host for a low price. But because they became popular very fast the quality dropped like hell. At the moment my web development community still runs on it.

A while ago I rented my first dedicated server at Leaseweb.com, I now have it for about 3 or 4 months. Everything works like a charm atm (CentOS, PHP 5.2.*, MySQL 5.*, Apache 2.*) so my community will be transferd to that server in a few months.

Your own dedicated server is expensive, but it opens a big door... You can host whatever you like. I had a Counter Strike 1.6 server for a few months, just because i could. Also i can get a new domain with hosting for just 6 euro extra per year since i only have to pay for the domain. So when i think of a domain i just buy it for 6 euro and i have it. :)

I was the one looking at Toasted Penguin. I decided to go with Peachy Dandy instead because TP wanted to charge me an extra $2 per addon domain above the tiny 5 limit on the plan I wanted, but peachy dandy allows unlimited domains. Period. Plus peachy dandy set me up a custom plan on request which was really nice.

Peachy Dandy has been good so far, but I have only been with them for a few weeks now. Peachy Dandy has all the good stuff, Mod_Rewrite, PHP 4 and 5, MySQL 5, Send_Mail.

Didn't I offer you free hosting?

Free hosting just doesn't give you the kind of freedom delayedinsanity probably wants. Not to say that your hosting is bad or incomplete.

Indeed you did, and I fully appreciate the offer, though we never managed to hammer out any details on MSN. If I was to go with paid hosting, there would definitely be a couple solid reasons why however. Some of those being guaranteed 24hr on call techs, dedicated bandwidth, amongst other things. I'm not sure what you had, you never told me if it was just a server running at home, or if you happened to have a farm in your basement, so I'm not trying to hack on what you got, just listing a few things that you get with a solid contract (hopefully, haha).

Another vote for Slicehost. Their support is 2nd to none and the guides written to help non VPS'ers get started are excellent. You'll have no trouble if you move there.
