Default First Dedicated Server.... Help

Hi guys,

Ive just been given access to my first dedicated server which im going to use for a video upload site with ffmpeg.

Ive got ssh and a webmin interface. Ive managed to work out how to get the Apache and Mysql servers up and running so i can see the site via the IP address.

But now im stuck! I still need to link up the domain name with that IP and also install an FTP server (i think) as the only way i can currently upload files is through the webmin file transfer page.

When i try and install the ProFTPD module i see the message that its not installed or no config file is found. I cant manually see a config file even after running the install from webmin. I also cant seem to download the install file from the ProFTPD site

Can anyone give me any advice on those couple of questions?

Thanks!
Mike

What distro are you using? Are you comfortable with command line?

I think this is what you want:

CentOS Linux 5
Webmin version 1.410

I know the *basics* of command line, i can move around easy enough and ive played around with ffmpeg to know how that works.

CentOS | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

That is a great place to get howto articles. If you have yum then installing proftp should be as easy as yum install proftp

Here is an article that will help you setup the server: CentOS 5.1 Server Setup: LAMP, Email, DNS, FTP, ISPConfig (a.k.a. The Perfect Server) | HowtoForge - Linux Howtos and Tutorials

In order to get your domain to point to the box, setup a A record that goes to the IP address of the box. It's that easy. I've never used webmin so I don't know how or even if that handles virtual hosts so you can have multiple websites on one server.

Edit: I'd highly recommend going with a managed dedicated server since it sounds like you have no clue what you are doing. A lot can go wrong if not setup correctly.
