"There is also a panel with representatives from Flickr, YouTube and Facebook on the challenges of scaling MySQL to run busy Web sites"

Facebook runs MySQL? I always thought it ran on the souls of lost children and bad corn flakes.

Bad corn flakes aren't as bad as rotton Wheaties.

Honestly, people should worry about using less queries, instead of the speed of their queries.

Theres only so many queries you can cut out. but on the 20% bit - as Village_Idiot said, I'll believe it when I see it.

20% is a huge claim; the article doesn't specifically mention if it's attributed to Maria or what combination of factors. I for one have been too busy to test the 5.1 release candidates or to test out Maria to find out.

As to whether or not you should use fewer queries, that's debatable. You should definitely learn the most optimal way to store and index data, and of course the proper use of them in the queries you do use.
