Google Mashup Editor

Hi all,

Has anyone here used the Google Mashup Editor? If so, what do you think of it?

I've been playing about with it today and well... for want of a better word, it's awful.

The editor itself is written in Javascript and is very slow and very buggy. I tried to use an external editor then paste the code in to the editor but it can't seem to handle newlines so the formatting was just screwed.

As for the language, it's essentially a javascript wrapper library for the Google APIs and comes with the usual api functions to make coding quicker. Whilst I can see how it makes life easier for creating Javascript-powered websites that interact with Google services, I'm not sure why you would want to.

GME is an interesting experiment and I'm hoping it will improve over time (especially the editor itself!) but I think I'll leave it be for now :-)

And finally, here's a demo:

Latest Threads from TalkPHP

And the code used to created it:

Javascript Code:
<gm:page title="Latest Threads from TalkPHP" authenticate="false">

    <div class="gm-app-header">
        <h1>Latest Threads from TalkPHP</h1>
        Click on the thread title to view
    </div>

    <table>
        <tr valign="top">
            <td style="padding-right:15px" valign="top">
                <gm:list id="myList" data="http://www.talkphp.com/external.php?type=rss2" pagesize="10"/>
            </td>

            <td valign="top">
                <gm:item id="myItem" template="myItemTemplate">
                    <gm:handleEvent src="myList"/>
                </gm:item>
            </td>
        </tr>
    </table>

    <gm:template id="myItemTemplate">
        <div repeat="true">
            <strong><gm:text ref="atom:title"/></strong><br />
            Posted by&nbsp;<strong><gm:text ref="atom:author/name" /></strong>&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<strong><gm:text ref="atom:category/term" /></strong>&nbsp;forum on&nbsp;<strong><gm:date ref="published" /></strong>
            <hr size="1"/>
            <gm:html ref="atom:content"/>
        </div>
    </gm:template>

</gm:page>

Looks pretty awesome non the less. A sort of RSS in Javascript feeling is what I'm getting.

Thanks for sharing Alan!

There isn't really much to look at inside the GME I'm afraid :-)

It has an editor:

A feed browser which helps when trying to determine element names for feeds you want to consume:

And finally the Sandbox for testing your applications:

When you save your applications they are saved to Google Code (eg, Google Code) and when you publish the application it gets published to http://your-app-sub-domain.googlemashups.com. There are no other options at the moment.

I've been playing around with Yahoo! Pipes a bit. Seems pretty similar.

Ahh, so that's where Google stole the idea from :-D Will have a go with Pipes later, see if they are any better than Googles attempt.
