Default MySQL Sell Up

Semi-interesting news for us in web development, MySQL announced today that they have been bought by Sun Microsystems for $1 billion.

Quote:
SANTA CLARA, CA January 16, 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of one of the world's fastest growing open source databases for approximately $1 billion in total consideration. The acquisition accelerates Sun's position in enterprise IT to now include the $15 billion database market. Today's announcement reaffirms Sun's position as the leading provider of platforms for the Web economy and its role as the largest commercial open source contributor.

Wouldn't have thought it will change much for us MySQL users - certainly won't hurt to have the power of Sun's development team working on it

Ditto; this might make it 100% open for any use.

Interesting. Sun will probably make it 100% open source.

$1 billion can't be bad!

Nothing might change. They'll probably add more support for Java now.

this could be a great move to bring java popularity back, with this move sun will be able to very closely integrate mysql and java. i can only imagine the kind of online java powered applications this will hopefully bring.

I quite liked the look of JSP, and so developing JSP further would be great, in my opinion! It's the only other web language that would come close to making me switch over from PHP. And don't worry folks We do have TalkJSP.com, and so if it really does happen, we'll still have ourselves a community!

Not sure, Orc, I'm still trying to decide. For now, I think it's a good thing.

I have no interest in Java, and for a long time have been quite outspoken against it. Mostly because there are a number of base language flaws that compromise security, that have been around since day one.

I must admit that I've not read much about JSP - in fact, I don't remember the last thing I ever read about JSP. What are these basic languages flaws you speak of? Care to elaborate or link me through to a website, please?

Drat, the one time I quote the article I read last year and now I can't find it. It was either on ZDNet or CNet, but the article was a sort of security audit about Java and all its then recent patches. Someone within the Java industry from the near beginning enumerated on a few base flaws that were in the language, and I think the JRE.

I'll let you know if I find it, otherwise scratch that remark. You probably already know of the cross-platform attacks and viruses that can happen with Java though.
