Hey,

I'm gonna be putting Ubuntu on my system soon and the only thing I require is a good IDE to do my development on. I require something that allows me to code in most programming languages and have colour coding. I'm a regular Dreamweaver user and anything on or close to that level would be great for me.

Anything with a built in database manager is optional, as I use databases a lot, but I believe MySQLYog works on Linux, so I'll prob use that as I use it on Windows and really like it.

Another option would be to allow me to save my files directly to my host via FTP, like I can do in Windows, as I find it so much easier than saving a file, then opening the FTP and uploading it via that.

Any help of this is much appreciated.

Hi Chris,

I've used Zend Studio IDE for a long time now and I can firmly recommend it. Although I haven't used it on Linux, it's built on Java so the looks and functionality would be exactly the same on Linux as my Windows version. The only minor downide (on Windows at least) is that it can be quite slow to load at times due to running on Java.

They have also recently released a new version called Zend Studio for Eclipse (I believe Eclipse runs on Linux - don't quote me on that though :D) which goes a long way to solve the speed issues but unfortunately introduces issues of its own.

As for the features you where after, it covers most of them:

1) colour coding - it comes with full syntax support for php, html, xml, css, java, javascript, sql, etc

2) Database manager - the latest version of Zend Studio comes with a handy database manager which while isn't up to the standard of the MySQL Windows tools, does a fair job of looking after your databases

3) Save to FTP - Yep, comes with this and works well. Use this feature myself a lot.

So, to summarize - bit pricey and occasionally slow, but highly recommended :)
