Intrusive advertising just around the corner?

I suppose it comes as no surprise that most corporations would love the so-called intrusive advertising. Drones following is around showing us what they think we will consume based on our past purchasing patterns. However, how long do you think it will take? For example, Facebook wanted to introduce a very intrusive advertising program to try and make some serious cash from the free social networking website. There was a huge backlash and from what I was reading earlier because of the privacy concerns, love seems to have turned to hate when it comes to Facebook.

Article: Facebook - How love turned to hate.

I was watching television earlier, something I rarely do, but when it came to adverts, because I wasn't watching live television, but rather television that was about 5 minutes behind, I could just fast forward through the adverts and catch-up with the live version and continue watching. Thus jumping ahead in time 5 minutes. That was good for me, really good in fact, but it's obviously really bad for the corporations who wish to sell us products we do not need.

After all, the corporations pay the television networks for the adverts they show, and although we've had VCRs for a long, long time now, pausing live television and then watching TV 5 minutes behind the live streams so that I can bypass the adverts, seems to take it to an entirely level. I can't see that technology disappearing, and I'm sure nobody wishes to watch adverts. Unless your recorded your television shows, or made a cup of tea during the breaks, then you were forcibly subjected to watch them.

Therefore, because of that, I can see the corporations of this world putting their foot down and demanding more exposure. Advertising has started to become very much in our faces in this modern day. Even on the Internet with such corporations as the aforementioned Facebook, but I can see them taking it a lot further in the upcoming years.

Do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing? I know I'm in a position where I wouldn't want to do it either way: I wouldn't want adverts in my face all my waking life, and nor would I want to push my brands, such as TalkPHP, into the faces of unsuspecting people where it invades their privacy - but I know there are corporations out there who are longing for that day.

The ads will never go away. the web needs them. we need them. They
dont bother me to much i would rather go to a site that is free with 2 or 3 ads then have to pay for each and every site i go to.

As for the whole past purchasing, I dont like the idea. I will agree it kind of is an invasion of privacy, and second if all these online companys are going to start sharing all of this data where will it stop.

I don't mind advertising at all. It starts to bug me when the ads outweigh the content. Nowadays, it's not uncommon to find 10+ ads on a single page. I find this to be especially true for programming sites. Not to mention if you hover you're mouse over the wrong ad, you'll find yourself with sound and possibly an ad that decided to take over your browser page. :(

I do hate the ones with sound good point and the ones that expand when you hover (yahoo music...) couldnt agree more.
