Default javascript update

hey there sorry if this is a bit of a n00bish question, but at present I just cant think how to do it

I'm making a to do list in php its only a simple test app which im building using my company's MVC framework as a means to get used to it and also build on my skills, basically each item in the list has a button for when the item has been done, what I would like to happen is for the javascript to update the value to say that the item has been done and so remove it from the list, can anyone give me a few clues on how I would do this?

TIA
