The smartest way, toobarph, is to use a Javascript framework like Prototype, jQuery or MooTools. I highly advise MooTools because it's updated regularly, has all the jQuery and Prototype functions, is easy to understand and code and has a lot of plugins and 3rd party plugins.
The most easies way is to dynamicly inject a div containing a list or something like that and displaying it with a style change (through CSS) or simply with (fading) opacity.
