PHP Magazine
After a lot of searching, I have only come across 1 php magazine!
Am I wrong? Are there more and I just dont know about them? If I was to start a PHP Magazine, would you download it? (in the future hopefully have a printable version). Would you write an article for it? I would be interested to hear your thoughts...? |
Magazines annoy me, they are mainly filled with filler content to justify more ads. They all get very repetitive within a few issues. I have always found articles more useful because they answer what I need. As far as news goes, there just isn't enough on it if your scope is PHP.
|
PHP would be the main language, but I would definitely include other related languages, html, css, jquery, javascript, frameworks etc.
I agree that magazines do sometimes get annoying, that is why I thought of a more Open Source type of magazine would be better, not just filled with articles sent in, but also great articles read on the web that people have stumbled across (i.e. blogs, forum threads...etc - with permission ofcourse). I would definitely want it highly community driven. |
Maybe you could do something like an online magazine? It could be "printed" on a page where you can flip through the pages (Easy with jQuery), that way you could have ads and content.
You could accept articles and news from anyone and publish it on the page. Printed copies could be purchased and shipped. (USPS?) It may work, but with the declining news paper sales I would call it a risky slope. |
Thanks for your ideas. I definitely want to keep ads to a minimum, this is not a high priority as it will be a hobby so income is not important. My main worry is not having enough content from developers.
Declining news papers do not concern me, as this is a niche market not to the general population. |
It would be nice if you made sure the main focus was the quality of content, not quantity. Personally, I think there are enough general web design related blogs out there, so writing mainly about PHP would set it apart from the pack.

Constructive ideas, thats what I like to hear :)

I will definitely start with the online route, and have the magazine as a downloadable PDF - therefore it is easy for people to print a few sections if they like.
I need help with names, any ideas? The most descriptive one is 'Open Source Web Magazine' with the domain 'www.opensourcewebmagazine.com', it just seems a little long. |
The domain "oswm.org" looks open.
I would try to create a custom name, not a generic name. |
Thanks.
But...oswm sounds a bit of a mouth full, open source web magazine seems to role of the tongue easier :S. I guess we could debate about it all day :). Right, on with the magazine. I will keep you all posted with my progress. I will no doubt be posting back soon asking developers to write an article on a subject of their choice. If you have any ideas, suggestions etc please let me know. |
Also I need volunteers to review articles submitted - you can be from any level, as it must make sense to even beginners. Your name will be posted with the article, i.e reviewed by xxxxx
Any one? |
I could look over a few articles if needed.

I will be putting up a website for it over the next week, it will have more information. Keep ideas/suggestions/volunteering coming...;-) |

Eventually we will have our own site...http://www.opensourcewebmagazine.com. But for the moment most of the interest has been on linkedIn, hence why it has ended up being there. I created the group 'Open Source Web Magazine' the night before last and there are already over 50 members.
|
Personally, I would have gone with oswm.org because 'opensourcewebmagazine' is a whole 21 characters... That's almost as long as my password.
