Default Can't Install ImageMagick Extension

I'm using CentOS 5.3, PHP was compiled by hands, but I can't add ImageMagick to the extension. I have tried several methods like installing through pecl, then adding extension=imagick.so into php.ini, doesn't show up in phpinfo(). Extracting MagickWandForPHP at ext/, didn't work. Extract Imagick pecl package into ext/ also didn't work. Can anyone guide me?
