upgrading PHP

Ok, here's kind of an embarrassing question.

so let's say I have my Apache and PHP working together. Apache built with static modules instead of DSO.

Let's say my PHP version is say: 5.1.1

And now that 5.2.8 is out, how exactly do you upgrade the PHP to 5.2.8 with your existing Apache?

Secondly, say Apache is built as DSO, what are the changes in procedure for upgrading PHP when Apache is DSO?

I've always just built a new webserver and migrated everything over but that's not always a possible scenario so I've never actually just done an upgrade...

Unix I assume? What are the additional packages, is your server (for example) managed via DirectAdmin?

@Question; You can just recompile PHP and have nothing to do with Apache, PHP is just a module thats loaded at startup.

Hmm, I don't think I've ever really built my LAMP with anything special. I always compile my packages myself, I don't use RPM's.
(is that bad not to use RPM's??)

And yes it is Linux, sorry for not being detailed....

I always assumed it was somehow more than just recompiling PHP ontop of the old one.....is it really that straightforward?
