hi, im learning how to convert video formats into FLV and FFmpeg does the trick. but what im wondering is would FFmpeg be the only method to do this? i'm running it locally and it seems to be taking forever, although i'm converting a 500mb video. just wondering if you guys have tried other methods.. thanks

You're converting a video which is going to be slow. You will need a LOT of CPU resources to really consider converting videos, especially of sizes in the range of 500 megabytes. YouTube, I suspect, have hundreds upon hundreds of servers dedicated entirely to the conversion of videos to the FLV format.

If you've attempted to ever rip a DVD you will notice your CPU remains at a constant 100% throughout the process. I overheated my CPU one night by ripping a DVD. It was never the same again after that.

If you're going to be constantly processing videos then unless you have a lot of money to spend on servers, I honestly think you should find a better solution. However, if you're just looking to convert a batch of AVIs to the FLV format to upload to a website, then that'll be fine. Just don't be surprised that your CPU remains at 100% throughout. Also ensure you have more than adequate heating if you're going to leave your computer alone whilst it's doing this. With that said, you don't have much choice with that as everything becomes far too slow.

Lol you mean cooling, right? And yeah I agree with wildhoney, video conversion takes up a ton of resources and should be avoided if possible in a web environment.

then the guys who have youtube like websites are they using FFmpeg to convert uploaded videos to flv? i talked to a friend who has apgia.com and he says he has a dedicated server, and i'm waiting for one of his employees to sign on so i can ask him what video convertion their using but is it most likely FFmpeg?

Yes, or Mencoder 2 is another common one I came across quite often.
