Default C# - Newbie, Advice Needed

Hello,

I started my uni course today in Internet Software Development, it seems to be much more related to software development rather than the internet part. I was hoping it would involve some advanced PHP, Java, Ajax etc.. but instead we're learning xml and C# When I say we're learning, we're doing the learning ourselves. The big difference between College and University is that instead of being taught, we are instead lectured about the basics and encouraged to learn the stuff ourselves.

So basically I'm looking for some advice from anyone who has some history in C#, any books that would be of interest? We're going to be using Visual Studio 2008, which I've also never used. Apparently we have to create either an online e-commerce type site or some sort of forum by December! Using C#. I didn't even know that was possible, so I have a lot of learning to do!
