Default PHP books

How many here have used a book to learn PHP/MySQL?
I picked up a book about 4 years ago and it taught me a good amount of things but I feel that practice is what really did it for me.

What about you?

Nothing beats a good reference book with examples. Some books I've used over the last couple years include:
PHP4/5 Certification Study Guides
PHP Cookbook
PHP Design Patterns (PHP|Arch)
PHP Security (PHP|Arch)

Good choice, A friend of mine had the PHP Cookbook. Seemed like a good read from what he was saying. Right now I have Core PHP5, and Beginning PHP, Apache, MySQL Web Development. I have some more at my apartment down in Florida but am currently at the other house (Minnesota).

I got php for dummies, but it's actually advanced. It covers simple stuff but it assumes you know the basics.

First class book! Goes into so much detail on many various levels. Even goes into topics such as CVS for managing projects when you're working in a team. I know many PHP books where you pick it up and flick through all the bits you know: variables, arrays, scopes, constants, functions, operators. Before you know it you've flicked to the end of the book and still not found anything you don't know. The advanced PHP book isn't like that at all!

There's always Amazon if the search proves fruitless.

php and mysql for dummies did it for me. in about 36 hours i had already read the entire book (and got what it ment) and started recoding my old html website (that i had to update all the time) to a new self driven php-mysql website. that book saved me countless hours and now im hooked on PHP!

Just has to be ! :) Those whatever for dummies books never really appealed to me. No matter what the topic. They are nice, however, if you want a good overview but they don't contain any information that can't be found on the Internet for free - being so general. But for more advanced stuff you'll find it hard to find any decent articles on the Internet.
