I need to work with some large sql files (around 40 mb) mainly to do some search and replace of old urls with new ones, and was just wondering if you know of any good editors that can hand large files?

Dreamweaver just freezes, despite me having 4GB of ram! (Using Vista 64bit).

Anyone know of any good editors or programs up to the job? Could I use wordpad perhaps?

Freeware would be nice too!

Well there's your problem. You actually only have about 4, maybe 5 kilobytes left over for anything other than Vista to use.

I would suggest giving Notepad++ a go.

Know what you mean about vista, although must say I find it 'ok', bit nicer than XP. Just wish Apple would bring out OSX for the PC!

My favourite review of XP vs Vista

I use Macs at School and there's a few things about them that frustrate the heck out of me, but nothing more than when I come home and I find myself hitting the ALT key when I want the CTRL key.

Now why on earth would you want that?

get rid of Vista its hopeless, as is XP(although the best windows version atm).

Get a good linux distro (preferably a debian based one) and you will never look back and its FREE! also you can make it look 'cool' and 'flash' (or gay as i call it) like vista :

As for editors, linux has a whole host of them, i personally use VI, but its kinda complicated for people used to notepad++ etc, there is emacs which is good to but like VI difficult to master.

for simplish editors i recommend Kate:

or there is bluefish, which someone i work with uses and sings its praises but i can't personally understand why:

all can be installed very easily using 'Advanced Package Tool' on a debian distro (like ubuntu, to be entered into a terminal window,):
you may need to be root in order to use apt, in ubuntu you use 'sudo' (super user do) as the root password is disabled by defualt in ubuntu:
there are more editors but i cant currently remember them off the top of my head.

I did, and I love Linux. On my server. I liked it on my desktop too, it was the coolest looking, most stable, best OS I've ever ran, and Debian was by far my favourite distro. It's too bad the application support is piss poor though. I don't want to have to run a virtual machine or emulator to run my Adobe products, for example.

Technically the application support isnt a linux problem, the problem is at the software development companies not releasing linux binaries but i do understand what you mean.

The way i get round that is i have 2 computers and i use x2vnc to control my windows and linux so i can use both OS's at the same time. The other option is to dual boot using GRUB but that is annoying as u have to reboot if you wanna use Adobe stuff in windows for example, or you could just use WINE to emulate windows, this claims to be able to run photoshop on ubuntu:

but i havnt tested it.

Yeah, no I wasn't blaming Linux directly. Like I said, I love Linux, and would much much rather run it on a daily basis. I just can't. Some day though I hope.
