Default Your PHP History

I know we all love a good voting poll here at TalkPHP, so here's another one for you

I'd be interested to know how long everyone has been using PHP (as a hobby, for a job, just learning, or whatever ), what version you started out with, and why (if you can remember) you started using PHP.

For me: I started out with PHP 3, forget the exact time but it was around 1999/2000 I believe and I started working with it because I was introduced to it by a work friend at the time who was using it a lot.

Ashamed to admit it was only PHP 4.3.3 I believe. Haven't been around the PHP scene that long obviously.

I started playing with PHP at the PHP 3 stage somewhere in the late-ish nineties, though precisely where my memory is failing to crawl back to! I do remember falling into PHP when SSI (eg, <!--#echo var="LAST_MODIFIED"-->) proved much too limited.

I think I might be the only one who started out with PHP5.

I tinkered with some php3 stuff a long time ago, but didn't really start learning the language until later on.

I started to work with basic php scripts just before PHP4 was released, so it must have been PHP3.

I must admit that PHP did catch my interest but it was hard for me to learn at that time as I only was 11. A few years after (2003/2004) PHP growed up and when I looked more into development of websites I finally started to learning it and I've been doing it ever since.

=)

Like several of you, I started with v3 back in '98 or so when I was first introduced to BSD and Linux, but unfortunately didn't really do much with it then. I definitely did more with Perl than with PHP, now it's just the opposite. The majority of the PHP coding I've done was in early v4 and I've performed "patchwork fixes" on it when necessary as newer versions either provided new ways to do things or altered them altogether.

I really need to redo everything in v5 & OOP but I'm too lazy and I won't get paid to do it, so cest la vie.

I started right as PHP4 came out, but unfortunately the shared web hosting I had at the moment was still supporting php3.

Even to this day though, I've worked on projects completely written in PHP3 and helped to port them over to PHP5.
