Default Firefox Myths

It's no secret that I've become increasingly annoyed with Firefox recently. There was a time I used Firefox because it just seemed a lot faster to me than IE. And I suppose also I was taken in the flow of people switching to FF (or Fx if you read this article). If it weren't for Firebug not being supported on Opera, I'd have switched over to Opera a long time ago!

This brings me to an interesting article I've just been reading about Firefox myths. Definitely worth a read!

Do those myths matter at all? Most of the "myths" stated probably occur in a lot of browsers, not a single one of them is perfect. I use firefox because of the web design features you can implement, IE has tabs too now but yeah as a web designer the choice is easy for me.

Firefox is far from perfect, sometimes it's quite unstable but maybe that's because of all the extra features I installed or just my pc which isn't great either.

I don't know if there are any noticable speed differences between browsers, I think it depends mainly on the websites server you're viewing, not the browser itself.

Maybe it's obvious from this that I don't like IE, but still I think we should try to approach this in a professional way and make our applications work in every browser with a significant amount of users...

Let's just hope that people stop using IE6 soon and IE8 expectations turn into reality so css and other cross browser compatibility issues decrease a bit.

You make some valid pointers, Jelmer. Though Firefox is slow for me out-of-the-box with no plugins installed. Initially I thought that may have been the issue, but it turns out the so-called memory leak is not a memory leak at all, according to that article, but rather a feature of Firefox in that it caches every page you visit for a certain amount of time.

I'm not overly keen on IE either, though I am now a big fan of Opera! Very fast browser and it gets the job done. I always make my applications compatible in as many browsers as possible. Though I do not go out of my way to ensure it's OK in browsers that have a user share of less than 0.5%.

Hopefully FF 3 will get better at memory management.
