Mentor's Switchboard

Hello, so i got this idea. You can do a new forum section called

Mentor's Switchboard

and as the title say it would be a place where people could request a more advanced programmer to mentor the less advanced person.

Or even do like this, mentor in what you are good at.
if you want that. "like photoshop" or something, Or just programing.

//guide! [Example]
Having a programming mentor, is becoming increasingly popular among the coder community.

If you wish to become a student or apprentice to a skilled programmer, then make a thread in this forum.

Here is a guideline on what to include:
Quote:

- explaining in detail why it would benefit you
- your current skills
- future intentions
- why you want to be a skilled coder
- contact details
Remember, the demand for mentors does not match the supply, and being picked is all down to how well your post is. So make it count!
Hopefully this project will turn out to be very successful here.

Also you could then make another forum for mentors to learn how to help there students better!
I hope you consider this idea as it is good!

I don't want any credits for the idea or so on.
I am just happy if this will happen here.

so yeah, Cya. And thank you for your time!

It sounds interesting. Although I would like to hear some other opinions from members here on the idea. New and old members alike!

ok, yeah me to ;D and thank you for the fast answer :)

It's a good idea, as is any which aims to disseminate knowledge to those who want to gain some. However, I don't really see it working here. We have lots of experienced folks, lots of "ok" folks and lots of folks who don't know very much (PHP) at all. That's not a problem. Where I see the problem is having mentors who are willing and able to devote their time (for free) towards a structured mentoring system for individuals. Why do this, when we have a whole community who can work together answer queries, questions and/or guide people in their learning?

codefreek 10-27-2008 07:48 PM

or maybe you could hire like some mentors that can gain like talkphp credits so when you have 100 credits you get a present :) or something like that + my price would be to see someone learn more with help then by them self.

+ i think their is at least some people who is willing to be a mentor + you could do a test to check if the person is fit to be a mentor + post count minimum for requesting a mentor should be like 200 + and mentors should be a long time member of talkphp hum some more things i need to cover hum..hum, //will edit if i have some more info ;) also a mentor and a student might talk for a while to see if it would work and if the mentor thinks this could work out he will train him to be a ultimate guru ;)

I kinda agree with salathe. But I still vote for this idea, I'd love to learn some more framework, and general OOP programming :-)

codefreek 10-28-2008 06:13 AM

oh and i just came up with a thing that could work. (yeah i know i am a idea man xd)',
well the idea was like tanax said what he wanted to learn we could do like this that for him to get those training he would need to help like 1 - 3 new members learn the basic then he will get hes training etc.. so everyone gets what they need but in order to get it you need to help out as well. That would work i think ;) any comments on that ?

Tanax 10-28-2008 09:50 AM

That'd work well for the so-so programmer like myself. But how would it work for say Salathe? Who will he get his help from? It's not exactly like he need help so xD

codefreek 10-28-2008 09:56 AM

Well, i don't know but there is always something new to learn

codefreek 10-29-2008 11:50 AM

No more comments :/ ?

codefreek 11-04-2008 07:27 PM

So this idea not happening :P ?

zxt3st 11-18-2008 11:31 AM

this idea is great, one of the forum i happen to be a member there is having this kind of idea.

When someone ask for a mentor, the mentor doesn't spoonfed his student/apprentice but will only be a guide for them.

Both of the parties should be able to come up on how they will be handling the sessions on which they will conduct there counseling. It may be through IM or IRC or whatever they want it.

And also in this way, learning will be fun and more interactive.

Will this idea be possible?

codefreek 11-19-2008 08:01 PM

Thanks for the support and don't forget to vote yes!

zxt3st 11-20-2008 02:42 AM

yeah no problem :)

Wildhoney 11-20-2008 02:54 AM

If you get at least 5 votes yes, I'll implement it. Considering those 5 votes out-weigh any no votes.

zxt3st 11-20-2008 03:09 AM

Well, for those people who happen to post in this thread saying they agree should be voting :)
Your vote would save a lot of people.(o.O am i exaggerating?)

codefreek 11-20-2008 06:48 PM

my fellow talkphp friends show the support and vote !
trust me i will do everything in my power to make this work!
that is a promise, so don't forget to vote!

I am in support of this, if one thing is taken into consideration:
We are not their on-call debuggers or first goto guys. They need to do their part and still use the public resources. Now if it is a bigger problem, or some more advanced bug that would almost require an experienced programmer, that is what we are there for.

codefreek 11-22-2008 01:19 AM

yes, agree
Wildhoney,
5 votes make the magic happen ;)
hehe :)

Wildhoney 11-22-2008 01:52 AM

Are we all agreed on the name? Do we want the apostrophe in the title, or are we treating the two words as a name? What is it I have to do, simply create the forum in the appropriate place?
