Framework Section
 

I was speaking to Wildhoney about a possible new section for Frameworks. There would be forums in this section, such as a forum for Zend Framework, CakePHP Framework, etc. This would allow us to separate questions and articles that are specific to a particular framework, and also encourage people using these Frameworks to get involved in TalkPHP.

What does everyone think to this? Good? Bad? We'd love to hear your input.

Sounds good to me, I'm just wondering if we'll have enough material to fill up individual forums. Rather we have one forum devoted to frameworks - this will also save on the vertical scrolling.

That is a concern. However, lumping them all into one forum may not be feasible either as you would have to be very descriptive with thread names. For example, the thread "How do I connect to a database?" could be related to a number of frameworks.

I really don't think there's enough demand for even just a "frameworks" category as we are at the moment.

I think there is enough demand for a frameworks section, if you have one it would get used i reakon, but not sub-forums within it.

I'd propose enforcing thread names like:
[ZEND] Title name
[CakePHP] Title Name

I agree with bluesaga, it's a good thing to add such a section, but sub-sections would be a overkill!

I'm always hesitant to discuss frameworks in a forum setting, especially the big ones. We all know what Zend is, we all know what CakePHP is, they have their own communities set up, which are filled with both the good and the bad. (i'm just following the example names above)

So I think adding sub sections would be a bad move, right off the bat at least. If there turns out to be a lot of interest in a certain framework, spawn a sub section. Let the need decide the level of commitment from the forum community.

The reason I tend to shy away from forum discussions about frameworks is that they can get heated, everyone has ego's on the line when they make a framework, and not everyone can take criticism (We've all fallen victim to this trait at one point or another)
So if it's just going to be a help/advice section for frameworks, I think it may work out. But if it's going to be an open season on dissecting frameworks contributed by members, I'd probably not participate.

And, as a side note.
Codeigniter ftw. down with zend.

Well, I do believe it's good to have a framework section, because most of the time (junior) developers face problems using certain frameworks that already have been explored by other (more experienced) developers.

I agree it shouldn't become a way to compare one framework to another, but merely to tacle challenges within each framework setting.

I also know that each framework has it's own forum or wiki for the discussions, but I do believe TalkPhp can become a reference for all php developers and a first base to start the search for knowledge.

Thanks for all the input. I think we can agree that most people would like to see some introduction of a forum for Frameworks (obviously, just not a sub section for each Framework). To answer a few other questions, yes, this forum would be used for Framework related help, not discussions on which Framework we think is best.

One forum would be a good idea I think, instead of many because they will look rather empty, especially when they're new..

A solution to keep things clean would be thread prefixes. Right now it's a vbulletin mod but it is one of the mods that the official vbulletin team has "copied" so it will be implemented in version 3.7 (beta has been released).

I think its a great idea. Gives the community that much more to talk about.
