Default how to query the availability of a domain?

if i have a textbox and a submit button and an end user types in the domain name how can i make it to where when the button is submited the domain entered into the textbox is checked against something like godaddys server to see if the domain is available?

i wonder if i can do that with ajax also.

thanks
