This is all irrelevant now that you're going back to xampp/wampp but the fact that you saw a plain text version of the PHP script is a good start. That shows that Apache is up and running just fine! It appears that what you needed to do was configure Apache (in the httpd.conf file) so 'understand' how to deal with PHP pages. The details of which you won't be needing but are available in the installation documentation.
