I never found PHP books to be of any real advantage when I was first learning PHP. All the basic PHP articles can be found easily on the Internet. It's when you begin getting into the more advanced stuff you should consider buying books, in my opinion.
As Rendair pointed out, Tizag is a good place for articles, and of course, TalkPHP is a great place to ask questions relating to PHP amongst other languages - and to mix with other PHP developers  !
