Actually, i think a lot of forum software companys are getting scared at the fact that PHPBB3 is free and is becoming to have the same functionality as the paid ones. I think that's there biggest worry, you can mock PHPBB all you like but it's used in some extensivley large forums, even Gaia which has over 16 million posts uses PHPBB.
