Lol Tanax, yes I am aware of all them points. I am also aware of how dated vBulletin is. With a good team of developers and a good plan, I see no reason why a competitor couldn't potentially overtake or at least come close to vBulletin.
Don't get me wrong, this wouldn't happen over night, you're probably looking at 2-5 years development, but with something so popular as Forum software, the market is plenty big enough.
I'd personally love to have a shot at it. I know if I had the time and a team that I could trust, I would definitely put myself to it.
