I use the same programs all the time. EditPad for writing code. TrayColor for getting the exact color from an image file so I can use it in my design. Plus, I use SLUGS for color matching as well.

I have a few stock photography sites I get images from and those usually inspire my theme design. Then, once I get a basic idea of how I want to lay it out, I start adding the colors.

Then, I check everything to make sure the color contrast ratios between background and foreground pass WAI-AAA. If all goes well, it ends up online. If it kicks and screams -- well ... I just edit it some more until it behaves.
I hear ya, once you are used to certain products you don't want to switch. That's why I am having a hardtime not using Dreamweaver but I feel that I won't ever become an advanced programmer unless I hand code everything like you guys do.

I use an old version of adobe photoshop for my artwork and color matching. You know, I've tried all the new versions Dreamweaver CS3 and Photoshop CS3 and they are BLOATED. I really don't want to buy a book just learn how to use the new features that they provide when I've gotten by without them. And most programmers just hand code anyways.

Since we are on the topic of colors, what monitor do you use?
Anything special?

I admit I don't have very good monitors so that's why I go with hex colors that I am familiar with. My new HP laptop is an 18" 1080p monitor and the colors look great but it's 18". I need to get myself a nice 24" for designing...
I have it connected to a 19" monitor but it's a cheap 19" flat panel and it's only 6-bit. I'm "supposed" so spend the money and get a true 8-bit panel but I've gotten away so far without it..

But I can see a difference in colors between the laptop colors and the external monitor...
