In the end, it usually comes down to personal preference. But any table loving designer cannot ignore the fact that using tables for a layout will cause problems for screen readers that blind people use.

I don't know where you got that number, but for me using DIVS instead of tables requires just a little more CSS.
Here are those layout templates I made that I promised I would upload. Notice the tiny CSS files and easy to read code...
