One thing I have been working on is a remote search engine for websites. I am not sure if there is any room for it though seeing as how google has completely owned everything.
The key features that stick out of it vs google is the template customizing, api access, index only specific parts of the page with comment blocks, search multiple sites at once, category specific searching IE a person could get a page indexed (lets say a car website, and the search would be able to handle allowing the searchee to input make, model, year provided setup correctly) and any number of options.
Its something that I have been dwindling on because I already have the spider and indexer up and running, however I am just not sure if it is a wise thing to purse any further due to google pretty much owning anything that is search related (including letting users search there own sites and make it look kinda - integrated with theirs).
